Many of the songs feature lengthy instrumental passages, something would become fully realized on albums like . The flute and saxophone that appear on "For Free" and "Conversation" give a taste of the influence of jazz over many of Mitchell's subsequent recordings. The singer covers many moods, from the sunny, easygoing "Morning Morgantown" to the sentimental classic "The Circle Game" (written in response to 's "Sugar Mountain"). The album is notable for including "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Woodstock," some of Mitchell's most lasting pieces.
